Background
| ApoA1isalsoknownasapolipoproteinA-I,ApoA-I,andisthemajorproteincomponentofhighdensitylipoprotein(HDL)inplasma.Ithasaspecificroleinlipidmetabolism.ChylomicronssecretedfromtheintestinalenterocytealsocontainApoA1butitisquicklytransferredtoHDLinthebloodstream.Theproteinpromotescholesteroleffluxfromtissuestotheliverforexcretion.Itisacofactorforlecithincholesterolacyltransferase(LCAT)whichisresponsIBLefortheformationofmostplasmacholesterylesters.ApoA-Iwasalsoisolatedasaprostacyclin(PGI2)stABIlizingfactor,andthusmayhaveananticlottingeffect.DefectsinthegeneencodingitareassociatedwithHDLdeficiencies,includingTangierdisease,andwithsystemicnon-neuropathicamyloidosis.Inaddition,ithasbeenshownthatApoA1isimplicatedintheanti-endotoxinfunctionofHDLviainteractionwithlipopolysaccharideorendotoxin. |
